Anti-Whaling Spaceship

'Spaceship' boosts anti-whaling force against Japan's might

JAPAN has asked Australia to prevent the Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin leaving port to harass its whalers in the Antarctic next summer, but the plea may have little effect.

The anti-whaling activists plan to upgrade their fleet from an ageing, former North Atlantic fisheries patrol boat to include another ship - something out of the future. The global speedboat Earthrace would head south under Sea Shepherd colours next summer, the group's leader Paul Watson said.

"It looks like a spaceship. It can do 40 knots and dive under waves completely. We'll be using it to intercept and block harpoons."

In 61 days last year Earthrace circled the globe fuelled by biodiesel. The New Zealand owner/skipper, Pete Bethune, said he decided to become involved because "this is happening in my backyard and it really pisses me off. I'm going to make a stand."

He said he was adding half a tonne of Kevlar to the vessel to toughen it against the ice. It had the endurance to go half way round the world on a tank of fuel.

"They won't get away from me," he said.

Earthrace's role was unveiled as the International Whaling Commission heard that Sea Shepherd's protests endangered the lives of whalers in the Southern Ocean last summer when the Steve Irwin was involved in two collisions.

"These are highly dangerous, and it can only be described as a miracle that there has been no death or large-scale accident to date," said a Japanese delegation member, Jun Yamashita.

"We cannot tolerate such audacity," Mr Yamashita told the commission. "We ask for

all appropriate measures, including a ban on the ship from leaving port, so that we can prevent these acts from being repeated."

Mr Watson, who is not permitted inside the meeting, said the Steve Irwin was soon to leave Brisbane for Hobart after a $500,000 refit. Its buckled hull plates had been repaired, and it was fitted with a powerful water cannon on the bow to match the whalers'.

He dubbed next summer's campaign Operation Waltzing Matilda and has adopted a symbol with a kangaroo wearing a pirate's eye patch.

An official from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, David Dutton, told the 71-nation meeting in Madeira that the Rudd Government was deeply concerned about clashes in the Southern Ocean.

Australian Federal Police were conducting an official investigation, so no further comment could be made because it was possible the case would come before a court, he said.

Mr Watson said the federal police had returned videotapes taken from the ship in a raid in Hobart in February but still held the ship's log book. He said he had not been contacted recently by the federal police or Dutch authorities, under whose flag Steve Irwin sails.

The Dutch Government said it had warned the group about being involved in dangerous activities.

"The Government of the Netherlands is now preparing measures that will be announced in the short term," said Dutch IWC commissioner, Marie-Josee Jenniskens.

New Zealand's commissioner, Sir Geoffrey Palmer, told the meeting: "I think it needs to be said that whaling in the Antarctic will continue to be a magnet for protest that will not go away."

Sex, Drugs and Rolling Stone the Green issue, Miranda Kerr chained to a tree...

Sex, Drugs and Rolling Stone the Green issue, Miranda Kerr chained to a tree...
PLUS: Xavier Rudd, John Butler , Rob Hurst, Guerilla Gardeners, Ruby Rose, Skinny Neslon

On raising awareness of the environment: “I feel strongly about the need to protect our natural environment because it supports our life - it really is that simple.”

On the Koala Foundation’s ‘No Tree, No Me’ campaign: “It’s a sad thing. There are only about 100,000 koalas left in Australia. Something like 80 percent of the koalas’ habitat has been destroyed since Europeans arrived in Australia.”

On making the cover of Rolling Stone: “Oh it’s incredible. It’s really surreal to be on the cover. Rolling Stone is such an iconic magazine. You know that song, (sings) ‘On the cover of the Rolling Stone’ – that’s just so cool and I’m really happy to be involved in this!”

Xavier Rudd, John Butler , Rob Hurst, Guerilla Gardeners, Ruby Rose, Skinny Neslon, and more, plus some great eco articles (oh, and Green Day are in there as well, but nothing to do with being green, just the name!).

A great mag just got 'greater'!

Worth buying!

Hydrogen car unveiled in UK

Hydrogen car unveiled in UK
Updated: 11:43, Wednesday June 17, 2009

An entrepreneur has unveiled a hydrogen-powered car capable of travelling hundreds of miles between fuel stops at speeds of up to 50mph.

The Riversimple concept car, developed in an Oxfordshire workshop by former racing driver Hugo Spowers, aims to challenge the obstacles that have so far prevented a hydrogen-powered vehicle breaking into the mass market.

Mr Spowers told Sky News: 'We are taking a whole system approach, we're not just a fuel cell company, we don't focus on the individual parts - it's about the whole.'

The hydrogen cells that drive the electric motors are very light, meaning the two-seater car weighs just 350kg, considerably less than its rivals.

'If you make things lighter they need less power, if you need less power your fuel cell can be lighter and so on,' Mr Spowers explained.

The bodywork is similiar to the carbon fibre used by F1 teams, while the brakes save the energy they create rather than wasting it, so that it can be used for the next acceleration.

So who would buy it? Well, nobody - as these vehicles are designed to be leased to users for around 200 pounds ($A4010) a month rather than purchased.

For drivers willing to rent the Riversimple, the familiar problem of where to fill up could still be an issue, even though the vehicle can travel over 200 miles without refuelling.

Motoring journalist Mike Rutherford told Sky News: 'We are a long, long way from these cars being on the road - it's the supply of fuel and the lack of filling points.

'To have a hydrogen car on the road with no filling points is like putting an electric car on a desert island.'

Pilot projects can be found working in California and some parts of Scandinavia, but there are just a handful of refuelling stops scattered around the UK.

The makers of Riversimple say they would like first to inspire a small UK city to become a hydrogen hub serving around 50 pilot vehicles.

The next town could then be joined to the hub, thus creating a growing network.

Convincing people to get behind the wheel of what looks like a quirky Batmobile is only part of the challenge.

Two-headed baby fish in QLD

Chemicals may cause fish deformities
Updated: 13:53, Tuesday June 16, 2009

A Queensland government taskforce investigating the causes of deformed, two-headed fish larvae at a Sunshine Coast hatchery says it's possible they were caused by chemical sprays.

But it says there's no definitive reason for the malformations.

Government agencies and independent experts have been testing the area around the Noosa River Sunland Freshwater Fish Hatchery.

Locals have linked fish deaths and the deformities to five recent cancer cases in the area, blaming chemicals from nearby macadamia nut plantations.

The taskforce says chemical spray contamination is a plausible cause of the deaths.

But it says the neighbouring macadamia farm has been found to be using chemicals legally, and operating within industry practices.

A final report is due in February next year.

BMW Goes Electric

BMW to introduce electric engines
Updated: 09:40, Friday June 12, 2009

BMW has plans to mass-produce 'megacity' e-vehicles by the year 2015, BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer announced.

The car maker will decide by the end of the year whether to establish a subsidiary for the 'megacity vehicles' alongside the current BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce labels, according to Reithofer.

In contrast to other big car makers BMW has not undergone a partnership with a battery maker for electric vehicles.

'Electric engines are a key part of our technology which we want to develop ourselves,' the head of the research team Ulrich Kranz was quoted as saying by Germany's auto-motor-sport magazine.

BMW is currently testing a fleet of 500 electric MINI vehicles in Los Angeles and Berlin which are leased to fleet owners for a year.

Tesla Model S - it's getting real

Tesla Model S: $50,000 EV sedan seats seven, 300-mile range, 0-60 in 5.5s

Click above for a high-res gallery of the Tesla Model S

It's been a long and difficult road, but Tesla Motors has made it to unveiling No. 2. After a lot of hype and delivery of 250 Tesla Roadsters, the company's Model S was unveiled today in Hawthorne, California. Tesla was incredibly careful about not leaking a lot of information before today – designing the Model S at a high-security rocket facility helped with that, but we still got a peek a few hours ago – and now that it's here, we love what we see. As for new information on the Tesla For The Rest Of Us (sort of), follow the jump for all the details and check out the gallery of high res photos below.

UPDATE: we've added official pictures from Tesla, including this one of the Roadster and the Model S next to each other, to the second gallery below.

We have just listened to the panjandrum Elon Musk and the car's designer speak about the new Tesla S sedan, and these are the things to know about the first mass-produced highway-capable electric car: production will ramp up to 20,000 units annually by the end of the first year of production; after the $7,500 tax break, the Model S will start at just under $50,000 – $49,900 to be exact; and 440-volt charging will be available. That base price is for the 160-mile range pack; a 230-mile range pack and a300-mile range pack will also be available.

Some other fast facts:
  • The car fits seven people and their luggage: five adults and two children in rear-facing seats under the hatch inside, with luggage in the boot up front.
  • If not people, it can fit a mountain bike with its wheels still on, a surfboard and a 50-inch television at the same time.
  • The dashboard screens were installed to rid the interior of buttons. The 17-inch main display is fully 3G and Internet capable.
  • The 300-mile range is possible (vs the Roadster's 244-mile range) because the S has 8,000 battery cells vs. 6,000 in the Roadster, the batteries have been improved in mass and volumetric performance, and there is more advanced cell chemistry in each cell, and the S has a cd of about .27 vs. the Roadster's drag coefficient of .35.
  • On a 220V outlet, the car can be recharged in 4 hours.
  • Option packages are being decided, with the only initial option being the battery pack. Customers will also be able to buy the 160-mile pack and rent the long range pack for a trip.
  • They are finalizing the warranty, and expect it to be 3-4 years for the car and 7-10 years for the battery pack. They expect replacement battery packs to come in at "well under $5000" according to Elon.
  • The quickness: the standard S will get to 60 in 5.5 to 6.0 seconds. A coming sport version will get to 60 in "well under five seconds," Musk says.
  • The car will get a single-speed transmission.
  • The body panels and chassis will be primarily aluminum, with a total weight of just over 4,000 pounds, about 1,200 pounds of that being battery mass.
  • For infrastructure, Tesla is working with a government-affiliated partner to set up battery changing stations at various locations. They will be able to change the battery in 5-8 minutes, "quicker than filling up your car with gas."
According to Tesla's numbers, buying a Tesla S will save you $10-$15K vs a comparably priced gas-powered sedan when gas is $4 per gallon. For an equivalent comparison, you'd have to lease a $35,000 gas-powered car. The biggest hitch: the car doesn't go into production until Q3 of 2011.

Tesla unveils world's first mass-produced, highway-capable EV
Model S sedan has anticipated base price of $49,900, up to 300-mile range and 45-minute QuickCharge capability

March 26, 2009

HAWTHORNE , Calif.-- (BUSINESS WIRE) -Tesla Motors is now taking orders for the Model S, an all electric family sedan that carries seven people and travels 300 miles per charge.

The Model S, which carries its charger onboard, can be recharged from any 120V, 240V or 480V outlet, with the latter taking only 45 minutes. By recharging their car while they stop for a meal, drivers can go from LA to New York in approximately the same time as a gasoline car. Moreover, the floor-mounted battery pack is designed to be changed out in less time than it takes to fill a gas tank, allowing for the possibility of battery-pack swap stations.

The floor-mounted powertrain also results in unparalleled cargo room and versatility, as the volume under the front hood becomes a second trunk. Combining that with a four-bar linkage hatchback rear trunk and flat folding rear seats, the Model S can accommodate a 50-inch television, mountain bike *and* surfboard simultaneously. This packaging efficiency gives the Model S more trunk space than any other sedan on the market and more than most SUVs.

"Model S doesn't compromise on performance, efficiency or utility -- it's truly the only car you need," said Tesla CEO, Chairman and Product Architect Elon Musk. "Tesla is relentlessly driving down the cost of electric vehicle technology, and this is just the first of many mainstream cars we're developing."

Tesla expects to start Model S production in late 2011. The company believes it is close to receiving $350 million in federal loans to build the Model S assembly plant in California from the Dept of Energy's Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing Program.

Building on Proven Technology

Tesla is the only production automaker already selling highway-capable EVs in North America or Europe . With 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds, the Roadster outperforms almost all sports cars in its class yet is six times as energy efficient as gas guzzlers and delivers 244 miles per charge. Tesla has delivered nearly 300 Roadsters, and nearly 1,000 more customers are on the wait list.

Teslas do not require routine oil changes, and they have far fewer moving (and breakable) parts than internal combustion engine vehicles. They qualify for federal and state tax credits, rebates, sales tax exemptions, free parking, commuter-lane passes and other perks. Model S costs roughly $5 to drive 230 miles – a bargain even if gasoline were $1 per gallon.

The anticipated base price of the Model S is $49,900 after a federal tax credit of $7,500. The company has not released options pricing. Three battery pack choices will offer a range of 160, 230 or 300 miles per charge.

"Model S costs half as much as a Roadster, and it's a better value than much cheaper cars," Musk said. "The ownership cost of Model S, if you were to lease and then account for the much lower cost of electricity vs. gasoline at a likely future cost of $4 per gallon, is similar to a gasoline car with a sticker price of about $35,000. I'm positive this car will be the preferred choice of savvy consumers."

The standard Model S does 0-60 mph in under six seconds and will have an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph, with sport versions expected to achieve 0-60 mph acceleration well below five seconds. A single-speed gearbox delivers effortless acceleration and responsive handling. A 17-inch touchscreen with in-car 3G connectivity allows passengers to listen to Pandora Radio or consult Google Maps, or check their state of charge remotely from their iPhone or laptop.

Tesla is taking reservations online and at showrooms in California . Tesla will open a store in Chicago this spring and plans to open stores in London, New York, Miami, Seattle, Washington DC and Munich later this year.

About Tesla Motors

San Carlos, Calif.-based Tesla Motors Inc. designs and manufactures electric vehicles with exceptional design, performance and efficiency, while conforming to all North American and European safety, environmental and durability standards. The Roadster, which has a 0-to-60 mph acceleration of 3.9 seconds and a base price of $101,500 after a federal tax credit, is the only highway-capable production EV for sale in North America and Europe. Tesla expects to begin producing the Model S sedan in late 2011.

Nature best controls Greenhouse Gasses

Nature best controls climate gases - UN
Nature best controls climate gases - UN
Updated: 19:02, Saturday June 6, 2009

Nature's way is best for controlling the gases responsible for climate change, the UN Environment Program said in a report on Friday.

The report said better management of forests, more careful agricultural practices and the restoration of peatlands could soak up significant amounts of carbon dioxide, the most common of the gases blamed for global warming.

'We need to move toward a comprehensive policy framework for addressing ecosystems,' said co-author Barney Dickson, releasing the report at the UN climate negotiations in Bonn, Germany. The event was Webcast worldwide.

Millions of dollars are being invested in research on capturing and burying carbon emissions from power stations, but investing in ecosystems could achieve cheaper results, the report said.

It would also have the added effects of preserving biodiversity, improving water supplies and boosting livelihoods.

Halving deforestation by mid-century and maintaining that lower rate for another 50 years would save the equivalent of five years of carbon emissions at the current level, said Dickson, the agency's head of climate change and biodiversity.

The loss of peatlands, mainly drained for palm oil and pulp wood plantations in South-East Asia, contributes eight per cent of global carbon emissions. China could capture about five per cent of its carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels by returning straw to croplands, it said.

Agriculture has the largest potential for storing carbon if farmers use better techniques, such as avoiding turning over the soil and using natural compost and manure rather than chemical fertilisers, it said.

Tesla Roadster - Click above for a high-res image gallery

With all of the attention garnered these days at Tesla's Model S sedan, it may be easy to forget all about the fledgling EV-maker's current product, the Roadster. As cool as the Tesla Roadster may be - which is to say, very, very cool - it's not a particularly useful vehicle for the vast majority of the population. After all, it's got just two cramped seats and hardly any storage space to speak of. Tesla CEO Elon Musk knows this, especially since his daily driver happens to be a Porsche 911 Turbo, which is one of the most practical supercars in the world.

With that in mind, perhaps it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that Musk has plans to make the next sportscar from Tesla a much more practical vehicle. That reportedly includes the addition of rear seats, plenty of storage space and possibly even all-wheel drive. All of this means that it will definitely not be based on the underpinnings of the Lotus Elise, as is the case with the current Roadster. Instead, the next Tesla sportscar will share its guts with the automaker's planned Model S, which will allow for "greater functionality with avant garde, aggressive" styling. Perfect. We'll take two.
